Olympic Club Ocean Course 2025
As the first group of 24 “lucky” souls who got into the Olympic Club tournament waited to tee off, they looked for a tree to protect them from the incoming rain. Yes, rain. It was somewhere in the drizzle category of rain, but definitely more than just heavy wet fog. It was too humid to be cold. The rain did stop shortly, the clouds never went away and the humidity only increased.
Our number of foursomes is often limited to 6 by the clubs we play, including the Olympic Club. Having such an iconic name and reputation, there is a strong demand from our members to play in the event. So strong that golfers have joined our club a month before our tournament there just to play in it. Several years ago, the board decided that it wasn’t fair to members who had been very active but weren’t able to register the day it opened, and, to prevent that unfairness started the process we use, which is to offer openings to a subset of our most active players first, giving them a few days to register, then to our next most active, and on down, until the field of 24 is filled. This year we made it down the third list, which contained members who had only played one event with us. It was the first time we made it down that far.
As for the event itself, huge thanks go to Vishnu Ramaswamy our member and his friend, Olympic Club member, Larry Vierra. Without them the event would not have happened.
Due to the humidity, wetness, and weather, the ball was not traveling far. A few managed this well. The fairways were cut pretty narrow, the rough was deep and wet, and if you were outside of the rough you were in the tall weeds, it usually consisted of a lost ball. You had to control your ball out there, and if you played a hole properly, you could make par. At 6200 yards from the Blue tees and 5800 from the Reds, it wasn’t too long for most. There were only two par fours over 400 yards off the blue tees. The Burger Dogs were of course amazing for the meat eaters. Non-meat eaters could go with the Tuna cup. All in all, it was a fun day of golf on a tremendous course.
Post-round we met downstairs in the sports bar for refreshments and to hear tales of woe and joy. And to sing Happy Birthday to Brett Pedersen, who took 2nd place Gross on his birthday.
